Teaching at New Tech

We filmed a science class, math class and video class.  The students are so used to seeing the cameras that they don’t even react when we begin to roam around the room.

We began with Biology class. The students were showcasing their projects for the rest of their classmates. It seems that the teachers understand that communication plays a role in the student’s learning. They were given a very short time to say hello and get ready to work. Then, I began timing some of the activities.

The students came into the room and the teacher announced that the students needed a piece of manila paper and a marker for each project. Then after 2 minutes announced that she was giving 2 minutes for set up of presentation with one presentation per table. (lab tables) The student began rearranging where each was going to setup. The teacher didn’t tell the students what or where but expected them to solve the problem of getting it setup.

At exactly 2 minutes, she stood on the bench and asked students to close laptops to 3/4 close and then showed them an exemplary example from another class and explained a gallery walk. Did you miss that she stood up on the bench to talk to the students? They didn’t even balk so it must be a common occurrence. The students were going to visit each project and leave a comment on the manila paper left at the project.
